Thom Yorke, principally known for his role as Radiohead's front-man and primary songwriter, was born in Northamptonshire (United Kingdom) on 7th October 1968. With schoolmates Colin Greenwood, Ed O'Brien, Philip Selway and Jonny Greenwood, he formed the group 'On a Friday' whilst studying at Abingdon School — a 750-year-old boys-only private school in Oxfordshire. 'On a Friday' were signed by EMI in 1991 and, at the label's prompting, changed their name to Radiohead (the name borrowed from the song 'Radio Head' on Talking Heads' 1986 album, 'True Stories'). The group achieved worldwide fame when their single, 'Creep', which had flopped on first release in Europe, became a breakout hit thanks to heavy airplay on west coast radio and MTV. Buoyed by the single's success, Radiohead's 1993 album 'Pablo Honey' eventually achieved Platinum certification in the US, and double Platinum in both the UK and Canada. The group went on to enjoy critical acclaim and further commercial success with later albums, including 'The Bends' (1995), 'OK Computer' (1997) and 'Kid A' (2000), cumulatively selling tens of millions of copies and seeing 'OK Computer' go double Platinum in the US and quintuple (5x) Platinum in the UK. Yorke's 2006 solo album, 'The Eraser', also met with critical and commercial success, entering the UK & US albums charts at 3 & 2 respectively and garnering nominations for 2006's Mercury Prize and 2007's 'Best Alternative Album' Grammy. Yorke & Radiohead recombined for 2007's 'In Rainbows' album, Radiohead's seventh, which was released as a 'pay-what-you-want' download — buyers could pay any amount (even $0). Yorke's second solo album ('Tomorrow's Modern Boxes', 2014) extended his exploration of alternative distribution mechanisms when he released it, independently, as a BitTorrent; it became 2014's most successful legal stream. 2016 saw Radiohead release their ninth studio album, 'A Moon Shaped Pool', and in 2017 the band reworked & reissued their revered 1997 totem 'OK Computer' as 'OKNOTOK 1997 2017'.
